Overview

MUFC founded in 1994 to help youth and their families escape poverty in the Mathare slums All coaches and players are from the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA)
Today MYSA has over 25,000 players on 1,800 teams in 140 youth leagues in the slums Before 1998 the media usually referred to Mathare United as “the slum boys”

After winning the 1998 President’s Cup, Mathare United became “the defending champions”

In 1998 Mathare United also won promotion to the Kenyan Premier League (KPL)
During 2001-10 MUFC was ranked as the 2nd best Kenyan club in the IFFHS top African clubs list In 2012 MUFC had an Advertising Value Equivalent (AVE) of over Ksh 669 million (US$ 7.9m)

In 2013, MUFC was voted by fans as one of the top four most popular clubs in Kenya

Performance, 1994-12

  • Since 1994 played 571 League, 49 Cup and 26 international matches
  • Won or tied 507 of the 646 League, Cup and international matches (78%) Outscored other teams by 969 to 501 goals (nearly 2:1)
  • Won or tied 317 of the 408 Premier League matches since 1999 (78%)
  • Won three national and four other Cup titles and the 2008 Kenyan Premier League Maintained its fairplay record with less yellow and red cards than most other clubs Completed over 5,000 hours of community service every year
  • Over 40 MYSA/MUFC players have played abroad in Africa, Asia, Europe and USA

  • In 2008 Kenya rose an unprecedented 52 places in the FIFA World Ranking (120th to 68th) Kenya also qualified for the final round for the 2010 African Cup of Nations/FIFA World Cup
  • 11 players plus the Head Coach and Team Manager were current or former MYSA/MUFC players Half or more of Kenyan national youth teams players are current or former MYSA/MUFC players

Unique in Kenya and worldwide

  • All players and coaches are from the same slums and youth programme
  • All players do 20 hours of community service every month
  • All player are trained as HIV/AIDS prevention fieldworkers
  • Sir Bobby Charlton called MUFC “the most remarkable football club in the world” (BBC, 2009)

MUFC/MYSA international awards include

  • 1992 UNEP Global 500 Prize for environmental innovation and achievement (Rio de Janeiro) 1999 Strømme Foundation Help for Self Help Prize (Oslo)
  • 2001 First CAF African Youth Development Award (Johannesburg)
  • 2002 MUFC named “Model CECAFA Club” for East and Central Africa (Kigali)
  • 2004 First World Sports Academy/Laureus Sport for Good Award (Lisbon)
  • 2010 Common Ground Award for community and peace building achievements (Washington) 2011 Beyond Sport Judges Award for Leadership in Sport (Cape Town)
